El comisario europeo de Energía, Dan Jorgensen, ha defendido que la Unión Europea debe redoblar sus esfuerzos para ganar eficiencia energética y acelerar el despliegue de energías renovables que sustituyan los combustibles fósiles, ante la "grave situación" provocada por la guerra en Oriente Próximo.

"Estamos en una situación muy grave. La crisis en Oriente Próximo obviamente nos ha puesto bajo presión en Europa. Es importante decir que esta es una crisis energética, pero en realidad es más preciso decir que es una crisis de energía fósil", ha afirmado el político danés a su llegada a la reunión del Consejo informal de Energía que se celebra en Nicosia (Chipre).

Jorgensen ha avanzado además que aprovechará la reunión para presentar a los Estados miembro un catálogo de "buenas prácticas e ideas para reducir el consumo y rebajar la demanda", con medidas dirigidas tanto a ciudadanos como a la industria.

La crisis energética

El comisario europeo ha reconocido que es "legítimo" que algunos países pueden verse obligados a corto plazo a apoyar a determinados sectores industriales o a consumidores vulnerables ante el encarecimiento energético, aunque ha recalcado que la Comisión mantendrá una posición "muy firme" para que este tipo de iniciativas sean "temporales" y "focalizadas" en los sectores más afectados.

Asimismo, Jorgensen ha sostenido que la mejor forma de proteger a la economía europea pasa por hacer "lo más atractivos posible" los incentivos para acelerar la transición desde los combustibles fósiles hacia las energías renovables.
